Problem of plenty: Colleges chase students to fill seats

Problem of plenty: Colleges chase students to fill seats

HYDERABAD: Serpentine queues at counselling centres for admissions to professional courses are passe. This academic year it's the colleges that are queuing up in front of students with freebies and discounts as the seats on offer are almost double the number of students. And the 25 per cent drop in number of students opting for professional courses hasn't helped matters any.

Small wonder then that colleges are bombarding students' mobiles with offers â€" 50% fee discount and evan a free bank loan. The St Mary's group of institutions has signed an MoU with Central Bank to provide guarantee for education loans. So in case the students fail to repay, the college will do the needful. There are others who are contacting students directly via text messages with discount offers not just on fees but even on rentals in accommodations close to the colleges.

And the competition to woo students is such that the fee for MBA or MCA is being cut from Rs 27,000 to anything from Rs 17,000 to Rs 20,000. "Colleges have even hired consultants to contact students by offering the seats even at Rs 10,000," an official said.

The problem of surplus seats has ensured that 252 MBA and MCA colleges will face a 'no student' year. Another 100 MCA colleges holding classes this year have reported less than 45% admissions.

Even engineering colleges, which are yet to begin the second phase of counselling, are now luring students with fee concessions. Of the 2.6 lakh engineering seats available, only 1.05 lakh seats were filled in the first phase.

This 'hunt for students' has the state government worried too. Higher education officials said that the government might issue a Government Order (GO) making it mandatory for colleges to have at least
50% of their seats filled in order to conduct classes.

"While the number of students has remained the same, the number of colleges in the state have shot by three times," according to technical education commissioner M Laxminarayana. He said that many colleges might have to close down for good.

Another official added: "If these colleges don't get enough students, they won't have enough money to retain good teachers. And consequently the quality of education will suffer."

Despite this the All India Council of Technical Education ( AICTE) has sanctioned at least 10 more engineering and pharmacy colleges which will now be added to second phase of counselling expected to begin in October.

State to submit fee payment plan to HC

State to submit fee payment plan to HC

Hyderabad : The state government will submit to the AP High Court a schedule for reimbursement of tuition fees to private professional colleges.

Briefing mediapersons about the government’s decision, the social welfare minister, Mr P. Subash Chandrabose, said the government has also decided to clear all the arrears to the college managements before October 10. The arrears are likely to be around `250 crore, he added.

The government is filing the schedule on the instructions of the Supreme Court. It may be recalled that the High Court had given an interim order directing the state government to reimburse the tuition fees at the time of admissions. The state government then approached the Supreme Court, which directed the government to make payments to the private college managements in a specified time period.

The advocate-general and the officials concerned will hold consultations on the schedule and the former has also been asked to take steps to expedite the hearing in the main appeal pending before the High Court.

The minister also said the government would soon bring legislation providing legal sanctity and statute to the fee reimbursement scheme. The main objective of the legislation is to instill confidence among students that the Congress government is committed to helping the poor pursue professional courses.

The backward class welfare minister, Mr M. Mukesh Goud, the tribal welfare minister, Mr P. Balaraju and the health minister, Mr D. Nagender, were also present.

EAMCET Second phase in October

Hyderabad, Sept. 15: Eamcet officials will conduct the second phase of counselling for engineering in the first week of October as over one-lakh qualified students skipped the recently-concluded first phase.
While 2.6 lakh qualified students were called for counselling, only 1.54 lakh turned up. Officials believe that lack of clarity on the continuance of the fee reimbursement scheme was the reason for poor attendance.
Meanwhile, officials have also decided to conduct second phase of counselling for ICET.

1 lakh students skip Eamcet counselling

1 lakh students skip Eamcet counselling

Nearly 1 lakh students who qualified in the Eamcet engineering entrance exam this year skipped the ongoing counselling giving college managements the jitters. Fearing closure of their institutions, managements have blamed the confusion surrounding the fee reimbursement scheme for the sharp drop in students attendance during counselling.
A total of 2.31 lakh qualified candidates were called for counselling this year, but only 1,40,452 turned up till September 9, indicating absenteeism of 39 per cent. While 30,000 students have been called for the counselling on September 12, the last day, the officials expect only 13,000 to turn up leaving the total number of absentees at 1.07 lakh.

This has created fears that several colleges would have to down shutters because of lack of sufficient intake of students. Of the vacant engineering seats, 70,000 would be in management quota and 30,000 in the convenor quota.
The counselling had been scheduled between August 31 and September 12 and the attendance has been coming down with each passing day. While students from rank 1 to 20,000 were called for counselling on the first day on August 31, only about 14,168 turned up. The number was 15,062 the next day and it came down to 15,033 on September 2, and further to 14,125 on September 3. Likewise, it was 13,326 on September 4, 12,250 on September 5, 13,920 on September 6, 17,781 on September 7, 14,171 on September 8 and dropped to 12,559 on September 9.
On the last day, on September 12, about 29,270 have been called for counselling, but the officials are keeping their fingers crossed.
