Nearly 70% students fail in 1st year B.Tech exams

Nearly 70% students fail in 1st year B.TECH exams

HYDERABAD: Of the 90,000 students who enrolled into JNTU-affiliated engineering colleges last year, 62,000 failed in their first year engineering exam, the results of which were declared on Wednesday. The exams were held in May. “So much for this craze to become engineers,” said an analyst.

Officials from JNTU said that over 40 colleges in Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy districts have got a pass percentage less than 10. Also over 25 per cent of the students who failed the examinations scored less than 10 percent in aggregate.

D N Reddy, JNTU vice chancellor, however, said that the pass percentage of first year students is poor this year as proper instruction had not happened in classrooms in the academic year 2009-10. “The number of working days were far less than 180 due to several reasons including political ones,” he said.

According to JNTU rules, the failed candidates will have to write supplementary and clear the test before appearing for second year examinations.

When asked about the reasons for low pass percentage, JNTU officials said that the downward slide in the pass percentage is due to an increase in the number of students taking admission in engineering colleges.

“Even students who get poor ranks in Eamcet take admission in engineering colleges as there is no dearth of seats. And the number of engineering colleges have increased multifold by the year leading to a decline in the quality of education. Both factors have contributed to poor percentage in final year results,” said Dr K Ramamohan Reddy, controller of examinations, JNTU-Hyderabad.

Fee waiver not for under-performers?

Fee waiver not for under-performers?

HYDERABAD: Students who fail in first year of their engineering degree might not get benefits of fee reimbursement scheme from the coming academic year. The state government is currently planning to confine the scheme to students who perform well in their studies.

The decision to introduce such restrictions have come at a time when the pass percentage of first year students in engineering colleges in the state have dipped drastically in the past two years. Colleges will have to keep a log of the percentage of marks a student gets in the first year. The students' attendance percentage will also be decided around the same time.

According to senior officials from higher education department the scheme will undergo remodification so that students who are under-performers do not take undue advantage of the system.

Income certificate must for fee reimbursement

Income certificate must for fee reimbursement

HYDERABAD: Stating that income certificate of family is a must to avail fee reimbursement, the state government on Thursday reiterated its commitment to weed out malpractices by college managements that have been exploiting the scholarship and tuition fee reimbursement schemes.

Panchayat raj minister Botsa Satyanarayana dismissed media reports which stated that government was determined to cut the number of scholarship and tuition fee beneficiaries as it was unable to cope up with the financial burden.

The minister said the Rosaiah government was keen to support the education needs of every genuine student and was determined to ensure that benefits reach only the deserving poor students.

Botsa said tehsildars have been issued instructions to adhere to the new format prescribed by the nine-member Group of Ministers (GoM) for issuing income certificates. "A family income certificate will be compulsory for students keen to make use of the government benefit. In case tehsildars are found misusing authority, government will not hesitate to initiate departmental action against them," he said.

Botsa said henceforth all scholarships would be released only after due verification, based on the recommendations of the GoM formed to streamline disbursal of scholarships and tuition fees. "All beneficiaries will be put online and their names are up for scrutiny. Fee will be directly credited into the accounts of the respective student every quarter only if he has the unique identification number that will be issued at the time of admission," he observed.

The post-matric scholarships and fee reimbursement scheme are being extended to SC, ST, BC, minority and EBC students whose annual family income does not exceed Rs 1 lakh.

He said student beneficiaries can avail of the tuition fee reimbursement and scholarship only if they have the mandatory 75% attendance in an academic year and only if they are promoted, that too in the convenor quota and not management quota. He said the GoM recommendation of having a financial ceiling of Rs 20,000 for self-finance courses was justified.
