1 lakh students skip Eamcet counselling
Nearly 1 lakh students who qualified in the Eamcet engineering entrance exam this year skipped the ongoing counselling giving college managements the jitters. Fearing closure of their institutions, managements have blamed the confusion surrounding the fee reimbursement scheme for the sharp drop in students attendance during counselling.
A total of 2.31 lakh qualified candidates were called for counselling this year, but only 1,40,452 turned up till September 9, indicating absenteeism of 39 per cent. While 30,000 students have been called for the counselling on September 12, the last day, the officials expect only 13,000 to turn up leaving the total number of absentees at 1.07 lakh.
This has created fears that several colleges would have to down shutters because of lack of sufficient intake of students. Of the vacant engineering seats, 70,000 would be in management quota and 30,000 in the convenor quota.
The counselling had been scheduled between August 31 and September 12 and the attendance has been coming down with each passing day. While students from rank 1 to 20,000 were called for counselling on the first day on August 31, only about 14,168 turned up. The number was 15,062 the next day and it came down to 15,033 on September 2, and further to 14,125 on September 3. Likewise, it was 13,326 on September 4, 12,250 on September 5, 13,920 on September 6, 17,781 on September 7, 14,171 on September 8 and dropped to 12,559 on September 9.
On the last day, on September 12, about 29,270 have been called for counselling, but the officials are keeping their fingers crossed.
